Nurse in famous V-J (victory over Japan) day photo dies
Edith Shain, the woman in this famed photo taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt in Times Square at th end of world war 2 has died at the age of 91 years old. For several years her identity was unknown until she called Times Magazine sometime during the 70s and told her story that she was a nurse at the Doctor's Hospital in NYC. Then on Aug 14, 1945 she took the subway to join V-J day celebration in Times Square. In 2008 during an interview Shain said "This guy grabbed me and we kissed, and then I turned one way and he turned the other. There was no way to know who he was, but I didn’t mind because he was someone who had fought for me.”
